The Chinese-owned British company MG Motors, a subsidiary of Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) Motor, is planning the launch of its first car in the Indian market. The launch of its SUV ‘Hector’ is scheduled in the second quarter of 2019. MG motors have set up a plant in Gujarat and have already tested Hector on Indian roads. MG’s Hector SUV shall compete with the SUVs like Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier among other vehicles in the range although; it shall be priced higher than the rest. Hector shall offer several features similar to the other cars in its range along with some that are unique. The panoramic sunroof offered by Hector is only available in the Jeep Compass; such exclusivity might hike the demand for the car.
Hector is the first car that MG motors wishes to launch in India that will be followed by the launch of an electrical SUV. The company shall introduce its first-ever electric vehicle by the end of 2019. MG’s ‘eZS’ was unveiled in the Guangzhou Motor Show 2018 and shall be available as a CBU unit from China. The all-electric SUV promises a range of more than 300 km on a single charge and can go from zero to 50 kmph in 3.1 seconds. Hyundai’s all-electric Kona that is scheduled to enter the market this year shall give tough competition to eZS. The French automobile company Peugeot also plans to unveil its electric car in India in the year 2021.
Under the initiative ‘Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India Phase II (FAME India Phase II),’ the Indian government has granted 1.4 Billion USD to subsidize sales of electricity-based vehicles. This development comes along with the government’s scheme that entails the monopolized sale of electric vehicles until the year 2030. FAME phase II shall prove to be beneficial to these manufacturers and might make India a booming market for the sales of electric vehicles in the future.
