LyondellBasell Industries N.V. has announced that PetroChina has decided to use its Hostalen “Advanced Cascade Process” (Hostalen ACP) technology for 1100KTA of HDPE capacity. China HuanQiu Contracting and Engineering Co. Ltd. (HQC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of PetroChina was responsible for licensor selection. The technology will be employed for a 300KTA high-density polyethylene (HDPE) unit to be constructed in Korla City, Xinjiang Province, a 400KTA plant in Yulin City, Shaanxi Province, China and a 400KTA plant in Jieyang City, Guangdong Province. With the increased capacity, LyondellBasell has licensed more than 7700KTA of benchmark multi-modal HDPE resins. The Hostalen ACP is a low-pressure slurry process technology that manufactures high performance, multi-modal HDPE resins with impact resistance, excellent stiffness/toughness balance, high stress cracking resistance and process advantages used in pressure pipe, and film and blow molding applications.

The PetroChina HDPE plants will begin operations using Avant Z501 and Z50-1 catalysts to manufacture a wide range of multi-modal HDPE products. The new licensees will be able to leverage LyondellBasell’s know-how for continuous improvement of production processes, sustainable product development, and catalyst expertise, by participating in the company’s Technical Service program. Apart from the Hostalen ACP process technology, LyondellBasell’s profile of licensed polyolefin processes and catalysts includes Spheripol, Spherizone, Lupotech, Spherilene, Metocene PP, and Avant. Liu Jun, Vice President, PetroChina Refining & Chemicals Company, explained that there is a high demand for high-performance HDPE products and LyondellBasell’s technology caters to these requirements. He believes that the selection of the technology for the company’s petrochemical projects will ensure the production of such high-quality products with a process that is sustainable, reliable and economically viable.

Wang Zhuoyan, Vice President, HQC has said that the licensor was selected after an international bidding procedure. He has opined that LyondellBasell’s ability to offer world-class technology will be advantageous for the company and the collaboration’s success will result in sustainable, long-term benefits for the PetroChina corporation
